When it comes to browser names, sometimes a browser is given a simple name that implies exactly what it does, like Internet Explorer. But Chrome? Why name a navigator after shiny metal?

The name is a design reference

The name “Chrome” was assigned as a code name to Google’s browser project early in the development cycle in the late 2000s.

It’s both a reference to the actual chrome found on iconic, speedy mid-century muscle cars – Chrome was designed to be a faster and simpler replacement for browsers of the day – and a reference to the design of the browsers themselves.

Much like the shiny chrome trim and bumpers of classic cars visually wrapped around the body of the car and showed off, the term “chrome” was used to refer to anything in a navigator. exception of the browser pane itself which was displaying the page. . (In other words, “browser chrome” includes the browser toolbar, tabs, scrollbar, and everything else around the webpage itself.) Chrome was the shiny stuff around meat of the topic, the page you were reading.

While Chrome was originally the code name, it also ended up becoming the final name for the browser. The development team held an internal contest to choose the final name for the project, but according to Google developer Glen Murphy, the names that came out of the contest were awful.

So awful, in fact, that the head of development topped all votes and insisted people associate the word “chrome” with speed, making it the perfect name to put on the final product.

And also a clever joke

Objectively, Chrome is a pretty cool name for a browser, although my opinion on the matter is perhaps clouded by a childhood spent at car shows and a love affair with classic cars.

Besides being a cool name, it’s also a very clever joke about the browser that bears its name. One of the most immediately noticeable things about Chrome, both when it launched and to this day, is the very minimal look and feel of the browser interface.

Chrome gets its name from a term that means anything that frames the browser pane, but, ironically, it has very little “browser chrome” to speak of.

In a 2015 interview with The New York Times, then-Google product manager (soon-to-be CEO) Sundar Pichai pointed out how central the browser’s tongue-in-cheek name is, in fact, to the Chrome experience.

There’s a reason when we built Chrome, we minimized everything about Chrome so that all you spent time on was the website you cared about at any given time. We wanted users to focus on the content they were using. The reason the product was named “Chrome” was that we wanted to minimize browser chrome. That’s how we thought of it.

If you’re thinking about why Chrome was named Chrome, you’re curious about technology names and trivia, well you’re in luck.

We also like to delve into these questions, like wondering why Spotify was named Spotify and wondering exactly what Roku means.

And hey, if you want less trivia and more Chrome-centric trips and tricks, we can do that too. Here are ten awesome Chrome features you should be using.

(Pocket-lint) – For many, Google Chrome is the only web browser worth using. If you want to see what it’s all about, you’ll be happy to know that downloading and installing it on your Mac is incredibly easy and quick to do. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps so you can finally ditch Safari or Mozilla or whatever for Chrome.

How to Get Chrome Browser on Your Mac

If you use Chrome on your Android phone or tablet, iPhone, or iPad, you might consider using it on your laptop or Mac as well. It will seamlessly sync your bookmarks, passwords, preferences, and open tabs across all your devices. You can literally pick up where you left off, which means you can start browsing on your iPhone, then switch to your Mac and access your open tabs. Plus, numerous benchmarking tests have shown Chrome to be the fastest browser available. There are few reasons not to use it. Unless, of course, you have a problem with Google and its data collection practices. But that’s another article.

Download and install Chrome on your Mac

Google’s Chrome browser is not pre-installed on a Mac. You’ll need to download it, which means you’ll need to open another web browser to access Google’s site to get it. Ironic, right?

  1. Open Safari or another Web browser on your Mac.
  2. Move towards google.com/chrome.
  3. Click on Download Chrome.
    • If the download does not start, click Download Chromium in the corner of the screen.
  4. Click Accept and Install and wait for the download to complete.
  5. Once Chrome has finished downloading, your Mac’s download folder will bounce back to the dock.
  6. Navigate to download and double click on the file called googlechome.dmg.
  7. This will open a disk image. In the pop-up window, drag the Google Chrome icon to the Application file.
  8. That’s it! Chromium is now installed on your Mac.

The first time you open Chrome, your Mac asks if you want to open the app. Click Open and make sure to sign in to your Google account. When prompted, make Chrome your default browser.

Want to know more?

There’s exactly one way to access the internet in the PS5, and that’s through Twitter. To access the app, you must first create your own account and then log into it from your PS5. It’s a good idea to have a secondary device like a PC or smartphone to easily access Twitter and create an account in advance without any additional complications. Once your account is ready to go, you’ll be able to set things up on your PlayStation 5 by following these steps:

  1. Go to the PS5 dashboard menu.
  2. Scroll down to the gear symbol symbolizing the “Settings” menu at the top right of the screen (to the right of the magnifying glass and to the left of your account information).
  3. Navigate to the “Users and Accounts” option and select it.
  4. In the “Users and accounts” menu, go to the “Link with other services” tab.
  5. Select “Twitter” from the menu tab.
  6. You will now receive a prompt to authorize your PlayStation account to your Twitter account. Instead of filling out the information on this page, scroll directly to the little Twitter icon at the top of the page above everything else and select it.
  7. You should now see a regular Twitter login prompt. Enter your Twitter username and password to log in as you would on any other device.

After successfully logging in, you should now be on the desktop browser version of your custom Twitter timeline. Congratulations, it’s time to scroll! From your timeline, you should be able to access any webpage linked via tweet.

While most Linux distributions ship with Firefox, all major web browsers now have a Linux version, even Microsoft’s own Edge. With Chromium-based browsers becoming the de facto web default, Linux users may need them to complement Firefox.

Opera is a great Chromium-based alternative, and it’s been around even longer than Firefox. It includes modern basics like syncing and ad blocking, plus a VPN and crypto wallet. The unique Workspaces feature, which brings virtual desktop-like organization to your web browser, is truly a killer.

Let’s go through the different ways to install Opera browser on Linux.

Download Opera on Linux

Opera is available on a wide variety of platforms, in fact, it’s one of our top picks for Android. Several official Linux packages are offered. These include DEB for Debian and Ubuntu based distros, RPM for Red Hat derivatives like Fedora and Snap for Ubuntu or any other distro that supports it.

To download: Opera DEB | rpm | Snap (Free)

Although not an official package, Opera is also available for Arch-based distributions such as Manjaro Linux.

Installing Opera on Linux using the CLI

To install Opera via the command line, start by downloading the package corresponding to the Linux distribution you are using. Next, open a terminal window in your Downloads folder and enter the following commands, again depending on the distribution installed on your machine:

On Ubuntu and Debian:

sudo dpkg -i ./opera.stable-*_amd64.deb

On RHEL, Fedora and CentOS:

sudo dnf install ./opera.stable-*_amd64.rpm

On Snap supported distros:

sudo snap install opera

On Arch Linux and its derivatives:

sudo pacman -S opera

Hurry Yes Where Yes to continue and enter your password if prompted. Once complete, you will be able to find and launch Opera from the applications menu.

Installing Opera on Linux using the GUI

It is quite easy to install Opera using the GUI with DEB (for Debian and Ubuntu based distributions) or RPM (for Red Hat derivatives) packages.

  1. First, download the Opera DEB or RPM package, then open your file manager and navigate to the Downloads folder.

  2. Right click on the Opera DEB or RPM file and choose Open with another app.

  3. Picking out Installation of the softwarethen click Select.

  4. Once the software installer opens, click Installand enter your password when prompted.

  5. Once the installation is complete, open Opera from your application menu.

You should now have Opera installed on your system! Be sure to check out some of the best privacy add-ons and productivity extensions to get the most out of them.

Install Opera graphically on Arch-based distributions

Although not an official release, Opera is fortunately provided in the official Arch community repository. To install Opera on Manjaro using the graphical package manager:

  1. Open your distro’s GUI package manager (e.g. Add/Remove Software on Manjaro) and search for “opera”.

  2. Mark Opera for installation by clicking on the Install button, To download button or checkbox.

  3. Select Apply and enter your password if prompted.

Once the installation is complete, you can launch Opera from the applications menu.

Install Opera with Snap on Linux

If your distro supports Snap packages (such as Ubuntu), just open your package manager (e.g. Discover or Software), search for “Opera”, click Install, and enter your password if prompted. If your distro doesn’t support Snap out of the box, you’ll need to install snapd first.

  1. From the Snapcraft store link, click InstallSo choose Show in Desktop Shop. If your browser asks for permission, choose Open link.

  2. A Open with window should appear. choose either Snap Store or your distro’s default software manager would work just fine.

  3. When your software manager opens, click Install and enter your password if prompted.

Once the installation is complete, Opera should be installed successfully and you can open it from your applications menu.

Uninstalling Opera on Linux

It is easy to remove Opera from your system whenever you want.

Uninstalling Opera on Linux using the CLI

If you want to remove Opera but keep user data, open a terminal and enter the following commands, depending on the Linux distribution you are using:

On Debian and Ubuntu:

sudo apt remove opera-stable

On RHEL, Fedora and CentOS:

sudo rpm -e opera-stable

On Arch Linux:

sudo pacman -R opera

If prompted, enter your password and press Yes Continue.

If you installed the Snap package, run the following command to temporarily disable the software:

sudo snap disable opera

When prompted, enter your password and press Yes Continue.

On the other hand, if you want to completely remove all traces of Opera from your system, enter the following commands instead:

On Debian and Ubuntu:

sudo apt purge opera-stable

On Fedora, CentOS and RHEL:

sudo dnf remove opera-stable

On Arch Linux and its derivatives:

sudo pacman -Rns opera

For those who have installed the Opera Snap package:

sudo snap remove opera

Removing Opera on Linux using the GUI

The typical GUI method of removing DEB, RPM, Snap, and Arch packages involves browsing or searching for “opera” using the distro’s default package manager. You can also open the DEB or RPM file you installed to open the package manager directly to the appropriate software page. Once located, click Remove.

Confirm by clicking Uninstall then enter your root password to continue.

Unfortunately, there is no option to uninstall DEB packages via the GUI method on many recent Ubuntu-based distributions. So if you want to remove Opera on Ubuntu or KDE Neon, for example, the CLI method is the way to go. Meanwhile, the typical GUI method seems to work fine with RPM and Snap packages as well as Arch-based distros.

You can easily install Opera on Linux!

Unless you are using a fringe distro, the above steps should have helped you install the Opera browser on Linux successfully. The exact software installation process may be a little different for each distro family, but the basic steps are more or less the same.

Although Opera is a cutting-edge web browser, it may not be for everyone. You can opt for another similar browser like Vivaldi if you want.

This browser also supports thumbnail view, mouse gesture navigation, voice navigation, instant messaging apps, JavaScript support, email, and the ability to pin a browser area while using other websites. Moreover, it is compatible with extensions and plugins so that we can provide it with more features.

Opera is not only a browser for computers, but it also has different versions for mobile phones, being able to synchronize with each other, without the need to create an account or establish a password, because we don’t we will only have to scan a QR code to establish the connection between our computer and the phone via a private and secure connection, with encrypted data.

Download Opera for free and install it

Opera is a browser available for virtually all platforms and devices. It is not only compatible with Windows, in its different versions, but it is also compatible with macOS and with different Linux distributions. It can be freely downloaded from its website and installed completely free of charge without installing any kind of spyware files or unwanted third party programs.

Once the file is downloaded OperaSetup.exe we have to run it for its wizard to guide us through the installation process. By default it will be configured as our default browser, so if we want to avoid it we must click on the “Options” section and uncheck the corresponding box. From here we will also be able to import bookmarks from our default browser. We just have to click on Accept and install so the whole process begins, during which it will show us some of its most important features.

First steps with Opera

Once we have installed the browser automatically, direct access will be created both on the desktop and on the taskbar. Just tap on any of them to start it and start discovering everything we can find. Of course, it should be noted that a banner will appear to allow us to try its free VPN, which if it’s annoying, just click on Don’t show anymore to make it disappear.

Quick access tab and interface

With the browser open, we encounter its Quick Access tab and its interface, which at first glance may seem similar to other browsers but also has its own details. At the top we find the bar where we can write any search or the address of a website, and just above we find its tab system with a plus symbol (+) to add more information. tabs to the panel.

In the central part we find direct access to different web pages, located in a category called Vacation time. From here we can access websites such as El Corte Inglés, Booking, among others, and even add a new website that we want to have at our fingertips. We can also modify any shortcut by simply clicking on its three-dot button and selecting Send to Trash. This way we can organize everything to our liking.

opera editing shortcut

On the left we find a lateral bar, which is one of its most differentiating sections from other competing options. From here we will have direct access to different applications and functions that can be very useful, as we will see below.

Opera filming location

Finally, it should be noted that we can set our location, for which it will be necessary for us to grant permission to the browser so that it can access the weather location, so that we can have a more accurate weather forecast. For our peace of mind, Opera servers do not record or share our location with third parties.

Left sidebar for tools and apps

From the sidebar that we find on the left side of its interface, we can have access to different applications or social networks. For example, there is a button for Instagram and others for messaging applications like WhatsApp or Messenger. Just click on each of them, accept the permissions and log in to always have them at your fingertips.

From here we will also be able to access other functions such as our bookmarks or our history. Also, it has a player where we can configure our favorite streaming music application such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, among others. Also, by clicking on the gear icon, we will have access to the browser settings.

Opera configure the sidebar

The best thing is that the bar can be configure to our liking so that only the elements that we are going to use more frequently or that are of most interest are included. To do this, simply click on the button with three dots at the bottom to open a side menu on the right, from where we can both add and remove items.

Privacy improvements with VPN

One of Opera’s standout features that clearly sets it apart from other competing options is its privacy and security features which come as standard through the inclusion of a VPN. This is free and works by default in Opera and we will only have to activate it if necessary and deactivate it when we want. All without the need to download anything.

To do this, it will be enough to access its Configuration section, by clicking on the gear button that we find in the lower left part of the interface. On the new screen, click the Privacy and Security on the left and finally we move down until we find the VPN topic. Here we see that it is disabled, so just press the button to activate it.

Opera enables VPN

Once activated, the VPN connects through servers around the world, so it informs us that the connection speed and certain web pages or services may be affected by the change. We can also enable or disable various options, such as connecting the browser to the VPN on every start, enabling default search engines, bypassing the VPN, enabling intranet sites bypassing the VPN and managing rules additional VPN bypass options. .

screenshot tool

Another interesting tool that we find integrated by default in Opera is none other than the possibility of taking screenshots in a more complete way than having to press the Windows PrintPnt key. We simply have to press the camera-shaped icon that we find on the right side of the taskbar, called Snapshot.

opera edit screenshot

In doing so, it offers us the possibility to choose between taking a screenshot, selecting the area we want to cut out to capture or saving the page as a PDF document. Once the capture is complete, an additional window will open from which we can edit it. In this way we can write text, draw, blur and even share it directly from the messaging services that it has in its sidebar and that we have seen previously.

Conclusions: is it worth using Opera?

As we have been able to verify, the Opera browser has enough features to plant face to the most used options. Not only is it a fast and light browser that consumes few resources, but it also has a series of clean tools and functions that other competing options lack and that can be very useful.

The inclusion of a customizable sidebar with quickly accessible tools and apps for social media and messaging is a great option for those who use them frequently. For privacy lovers, the ability to activate your own VPN without having to install any additional software or plugins is a plus in terms of hassle-free security. In addition, the inclusion of its own screenshot tool or the ability to connect to the mobile version without registration and password offers a very interesting addition.

It’s also worth mentioning that it’s not perfect, that’s all, because on your must, it should be noted that it has poor browser support for CSS2 and its update volume is not as high as other competing options. Likewise, during its installation, it tries to establish it as the default browser by default and without questions, so if we are not interested, it is convenient to deactivate this option from its assistant.

Web browsers as alternatives

When you choose our web browser to browse the Internet, we have a wide list of options available. They are usually free, so we don’t have to pay anything to download and use them. If we are looking for a reliable option and Opera does not stop looking for us, we can choose one of the following options:

  • Google Chrome: based on Chromium and the world’s leading browser.
  • Mozilla Firefox: the eternal candidate, free and open source.
  • Edge: Microsoft’s alternative built into Windows.
  • Brave: with advanced security system and built-in Tor.
  • Maxthon: with integration of torrent downloads into its system.

Snapchat announced Snapchat for Web, which is a new Chrome browser version of the app that lets the Snapchat community stay connected through their cameras while sitting in front of their computers.

Snapchat now available on Chrome web browser

Snapchat for the web also includes messaging features like chat reactions and chat reply, and they are also planning to roll out lenses. The new version of the browser is currently available to Snapchat+ subscribers in the US, UK, and Canada, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

More Business Benefits of Snapchat

The new version of Snapchat’s Chrome browser is great news for all small businesses that use the popular social media platform to interact with their customers, as business owners no longer need to communicate with customers only. through their phone.

Working at a desk is common, and being able to access Snapchat interactions from a desktop or laptop can make the whole process easier.

Snapchat for the web helps ‘keep conversations going’

Via a statement on their website, Snapchat said: “Every day, 332 million people open Snapchat on their phone and, with our camera, can start conversations with their real friends. Today we’re introducing Snapchat for the web, a new way for our community to stay connected through our camera while they’re in front of their computer.

“Open your laptop and head to web.snapchat.com using Chrome to start a call or pick up where chats left off on mobile. With over 100 million Snapchatters using our voice and video calls each month in medium, we’re excited to offer our community a new way to continue conversations on their computers, where they already work, learn and browse.

The cool thing about Snapchat is that even if your business isn’t using the platform, the app creators’ journey is a valuable lesson for any entrepreneur. In a previous interview, Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel explained how Snapchat came to be, saying, “Before we started Snapchat, we made this thing called ‘Future Freshman,’ which was designed to help kids to get into college, and it totally failed. We worked on it for a year and a half, and it just bombed.

Spiegel continued: “It was a very instructive experience for us because after that, rather than trying to make this really complicated and sophisticated software, we decided that we had to start with a simple concept, build it and see if people love it, then go from there.

Regarding Spiegel’s advice to start-ups, he said, “The most important thing for any start-up in particular is to just put one foot in front of the other and not get caught up in ‘I want to raise a lot of money first'”. ‘ or ‘I want to put together a business presentation first’ or ‘I want to build a great team first’. But really, the first and most important step is to serve the customer.

Snapchat’s Impressive Stats

According to Earthweb, Snapchat has 293 million daily active users in 2022, with 3.5 billion snaps sent every day using Snapchat messaging.

The platform made $2.5 billion in revenue in 2020, in a year it was valued at $19.4 billion. By 2021, Snapchat’s value had soared to $90.9 billion.

If you are a data scientist or a developer who mainly likes to use Python like me? Some of my ideas don’t leave the kitchen because Javascript is involved in the construction. Would it be nice if we could write websites in Python? Amazingly, at PyCon US 2022, Anaconda CEO Peter Wang announced a brilliant new technology called PyScript which allows users to write Python directly in the browser!!!.

Since JavaScript is the primary programming language for running a web browser and an interactive web page, Python is generally used for data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

Even though we have back-end frameworks like Django and Flask, or static site builders like Jekyll, Python is usually behind JavaScript for web development.

PyScript is an experimental but promising new technology that makes the Python runtime available as a scripting language in WebAssembly-enabled browsers.

Developed by Anaconda, PyScript is, as Peter mentioned in his talk,

A system for interweaving Python into HTML (like PHP).

This means you can write and run Python code in HTML, call JavaScript libraries in PyScript, and do all your web development in Python.

According to PyScript.net:

“PyScript is a framework that allows users to create rich Python applications in the browser using the HTML interface and the power of Pyodide, WASM and modern web technologies. The PyScript framework offers users of all levels of experience access to an expressive, easy-to-learn programming language with countless apps.

PyScript consists of a single JavaScript inclusion that you can add to a web page. This includes the basic PyScript runtime payloads and automatically adds support for custom tags used in PyScript.

Here is a simple example of a “hello, world” project in PyScript:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://pyscript.net/alpha/pyscript.css" />
<script defer src="https://pyscript.net/unstable/pyscript.js"></script>
</head>
<body>

<py-script output="out">
print("Hello world")
</py-script>

<div id="out"></div>

</body>

</html>

The script The tag is used to load PyScript functionality. The pyscript.css the stylesheet adds Python runtime environment loading, initializing during page load time.

Python code must be included in py-script label. The code should be formatted according to Python’s conventions for indentation.

We can import libraries using py-env tag identical to our requirements.txt.

It may look like this

<py-env>
- matplotlib
- numpy
</py-env>

If you are a Jupyter Notebook fan, you can also use py-repl tag to display the live coding environment in the browser for Python. It is mainly used for mathematics and statistics.

py-repl generates an input field on a webpage that works like a very basic version of a Jupyter Notebook environment. Here is an example of the repl tag in action:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://pyscript.net/alpha/pyscript.css" />
<script defer src="https://pyscript.net/alpha/pyscript.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<h1><b>pyscript REPL</b></h1>
Tip: press Shift-ENTER to evaluate a cell
<br>
<div>
<py-repl id="my-repl" auto-generate="true"> </py-repl>
</div>
</body>
</html>

The output to the browser is:

By now I assume you have a good idea of what PyScript is, how it works, and what it has to offer. As it is still in alpha phase, it shows promising results.

PyScript is undoubtedly an exciting new technology that allows you to run Python code in the web browser.

What is you think of PyScript? Will it really replace JavaScript in the browser? Will you try it in your next project?
