Google Chrome is the least secure web browser according to this report / Digital Information World

Web browsers are the interfaces that allow users to access the vast treasure trove of information available on the Internet, and Google Chrome is by far the most popular web browser. Users’ reliance on web browsers can make them useful in a data collection context, and any sensitive data that browsers like Google Chrome handle should be handled with the utmost caution and security, all things having been considered and taken into account.

Despite this being the case, Google Chrome was found to have by far the highest number of vulnerabilities according to a report by Atlas VPN. This data comes from a central vulnerability database and shows that Chrome has over 300 individual vulnerabilities in 2022 or 303 to be precise. With all of that said and now out of the way, it’s important to note that this is almost three times the 117 vulnerabilities that were noted in the second least secure browser, namely Mozilla Firefox.

In terms of overall vulnerabilities that have historically been detected, Google Chrome’s numbers are still concerning. The web browser has seen about 3,159 vulnerabilities since launch, about 800 times more than Firefox’s 2,361. More importantly, Firefox has seen its vulnerabilities grow at a slower rate than Chrome, so this gap is likely to widen in the years to come.

Microsoft Edge came third with approximately 103 vulnerabilities noted in 2022, but this represents a 61% increase from 2022. Edge has a total of 806 vulnerabilities that have been detected, indicating that it is experiencing the highest increase of all web browsers relative to its total so far. This suggests that Edge may become less safe to use than it otherwise might have been unless steps are taken to reduce this alarming rate of growth.

However, not all browsers are vulnerability hubs. Apple’s Safari browser saw just 26 new vulnerabilities this year, bringing its total to 1,139. This is particularly impressive considering that this browser hit 1 billion users this year, and this reveals Edge’s poor performance on this front.

One browser that has been incredibly secure is Opera. It has a grand total of just 344 vulnerabilities, and more importantly, it hasn’t seen any new vulnerabilities appear in 2022. However, Opera also doesn’t have a very large user base, making it a target. less attractive to malicious actors. Consumers should be careful and secure their browsers lest they get used to carrying out a cyberattack.
